“A festival is a celebration; it is an opportunity to express the glad tidings that I still live and can still do whatever it is that I do.” -dancer, Art Honeyman

From the 2008 piece, “Body Thought Nature”:

The wind slaps at my cheeks and I am aware (that I am cold).
If there were no assault would I still know,
Or is it awareness that causes me to shiver?

I went through my teen years with a keen sense that I was some kind of Darwinian mistake, that it was only by the benefit of modern technology, incubators and ventilators, that allowed me to survive prematurity and somehow pervert “natural laws” by growing up.

Festival 2008

We are excited to bring together a mix of artists, scholars and performers for the third Disability Pride Art and Culture Festival…(sponsored by the Regional Art and Culture Council and Oregon Arts Commission) This year for the first time, we include a visual arts exhibit featuring the work of Carole Zoom,  a photographer and Japanese woodblock printmaker living in Portland, Oregon. Carole has photography published in the Wall Street Journal, Country Living Magazine, Oregon Quarterly, Portland Monthly and Eugene Weekly.

Our Keynote speaker is Dr. Petra Kuppers associate professor at University of Michigan and author of numerous publications including: The Scar of Visibility: Medical Performance and Contemporary art, and Disability and Contemporary Performance: Bodies on the Edge. Dr Kuppers will also facilitate an open mike at In Other Words Bookstore and provide a disability arts lecture.

There will be a fabulous offering of performance including pieces by national and local performers, This years highlight is Body, Thought, Nature    , a performance that is the culmination of writing and movement research by 8 experienced performers including guests Neal Marcus, Petra Kuppers and Carrie Sandahl among others.
